I recently went to The Commune for the first time, and I’m happy to say I’ll be going again soon.

This not so new space is described as a radical community-centered, collectively-run bookshop. Launched in September 2019, the the store has carefully selected books that include environmentalism, art, poetry, fiction, prison abolition, queer theory and disability studies. Their hope is that the collective will offer a safe space, and that it becomes a useable archive for people who walk through their doors.

First Impressions: Firstly I have to mention how drawn I was towards the paintwork in this space. So calming – it’s called The Commune Green, and it’s also on the plates they serve the cake on. Loved it. Anyway, the space is kitted with simple, comfy furniture. Carefully placed plants all around the shelves along the books – I thought that was a great touch, bringing nature inside the building. I sampled my purchase of Yewande Omotoso’s Bom Boy. I apparently missed out on good cake as it was first week of opening for the new year and The Veganist was still to return and make her scrumptious carrot cake. The cake is a firm favourite for regulars I am told, even more of a good reason for me to return to Braamfontein. The bar area also has a bowl of statement badges for sale which were a great conversation starter. There’s a reference library up the stairs – where I ended up going after a whole hour of enjoying my coffee and chatting with Nonzuzo by the bar area. The reference library area has couches were you can curl up and immerse yourself in good reading or do some work away from the rest of the patrons.

“Without community, there is no liberation.”

You could literally spend hours browsing through their collection of books on sale or get lost in a reference book upstairs, only returning to refill your cup of coffee. Make a turn or call them for arranging an event you would like to host either in the coffee shop area or at The Forge which is across the street from The Commune as they co-exist and are run by the same collective. The Forge is a community center which hosts regular live shows. I see great events taking place already as there is an evening of exploratory music coming up end of the month. Follow The Commune here on Instagram or go to their website for more information and their offering.
