I pledged to read aloud to 3 children under the age of 11 years old as part of Nal’ibali’s annual campaign to celebrate by reading to the children in your life or a group of children at a school, hospital or an early learning center. This year the target is to read aloud to 2 million children. Nal’ibali has been bringing the children a special story every year for the past seven years, and this year’s story is written and translated by Lorato Trok titled A day to Remember. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to read this special story for the children in their lives and spread the love of reading.

Nal’ibali is a national Reading-for-Enjoyment initiative aimed at sparking children’s potential through storytelling & reading. I’ve been pledging each year and this year was no different, although with load-shedding and water cuts during the day – it was a bit tricky getting to read aloud for my oldest son Molemi after school as I also had an event to attend in the early evening. So I’ve decided that I’m committing to reading aloud for the children as part of the Johannesburg Literary District‘s drive to make reading aloud for children a regular thing beyond the #WRAD flag. I have just shared a delayed short clip of my son reading the first few parts of A day to remember yesterday before I had to dash off. The joys of finding a balance – you learn to fit in all these activities in one day.

This is from a visit at the library for the first time after signing up for a library card late last year. Nal’ibali had a free sign up campaign.

Did you read aloud to the children in your life yesterday? Share the books you enjoy reading to your children in the comments section or on the pages. The Nal’ibali site has a host of stories that are downloadable to increase readership in homes, so do visit them here.
