The much anticipated pilgrimage is almost here. With just a few hours to go – I cannot wait for opening night taking place at Soweto Theatre tomorrow night! Renowned dub poet d’bi.young anitafrika will be warming up things with a keynote poetry performance. If her SA Book Fair performance is anything to go by, we are in for a treat. The keynote address will be from Mona Eltahawy, a feminist, journalist and author whose new book The Seven Necessary Sins for Women and Girls is out and will be available at the festival or online.

Ticket is already purchased for that session and you can buy yours too here. If not, the day shows will be held at Eyethu Lifestyle Centre from Friday, 10am – 5pm till Sunday are free. With the evening shows held at Soweto Theatre being R20 on the same link.

There’s a session for everyone including the kids, with a host of authors to entertain them like actor and writer, Buhle Ngaba and author, poet, and fascilitator Philippa Namutembi-Kabali-Kagwa. Abantu Bookstore will also be selling a whole range of African books you can imagine including kiddies books. Last year I had to call myself towards myself and remind myself that I do have an ever growing collection. So come with deep pockets and ready to shop for those Christmas wish lists like mine.

There will be a documentary screening of the late Professor Toni Morrison, The Pieces I Am in the film segment of the festival. I’ve shared some of the event posters below, to entice you a bit of what you stand to miss out on provided you cannot make it.

Be sure to download the programme here so you can plan your weekend properly. Remember to bring your jolly self, a friend or two and a fully charged phone so we can take selfies when we meet!
